Infrared detectors are presently installed at two locations for curbside detection. When the pedestrian is detected, flashing beacons are activated to warn motorists of the pedestrian in the vicinity of the crosswalk. The beacons at SW Natio Parkway and Couch Street are mounted overhead, while those at SW Greenway and Talbot are post-mounted on the curb.

Microwave Sensors SmartWalkTM detectors are currently installed at the intersection of NE Sandy Boulevard and 18th Avenue and are being used to extend the clearance interval for pedestrians requiring additional crossing time. The City is pleased with the preliminary evaluations, which show the devices to work very well. As a result, policies are being developed for future installations.
