Orlando, FL.

During the spring of 1997, the City of Orlando installed a prototype LightGuard SystemTM that incorporated the company's Smart CrosswalkTM technology. The crosswalk is located on Livingston Street, just west of the downtown, and connects a major hotel to the Bob Carr Performing Arts Center and the Orlando Arena.

The activation system for the crosswalk uses infrared light and break beam technology mounted within the bollards shown in the photograph. As a pedestrian approaches the crosswalk and passes between the bollards, the beam of light is broken, and the in-pavement lights begin to flash (video). Since this device ascertains the directional movement of the pedestrian, the lights are not reactivated when the pedestrian exits the crosswalk.

The length of the crossing is approximately 17m (56ft), and the width of the crosswalk is approximately 9m (30ft) wide. Once the lights are initially activated by a crossing pedestrian, they continue to flash for approximately 20 seconds.

Other municipalities where the LightGuard SystemTM is currently installed includes:

  • Kirkland, WA (uses an push-button activation mechanism)

  • Santa Rosa, Fort Bragg, Lafayette, West Hollywood, Willits, Orinda, Petamula, CA

  • Reno/Tahoe International Airport

  • Seattle, Lynwood, and University Place, WA.
