The
City of Los Angeles is currently using Microwave Sensors SmartWalkTM
detectors on the east side crosswalk at the T-intersection of Temple and
San Pedro, as shown in the images on the right. Temple Street is an east-west
street and San Pedro comes from the south to form the 'T'. There are marked
crosswalks across the east and south legs only. The microwave pedestrian
detectors were added to the eastside crosswalk where push-buttonswere already
present. On both the norteast and southeast corners, the SmartWalkTM 1400
was installed to detect pedestrians at the curb who were waiting to cross
the street.
Two SmartWalkTM 1800 units were also installed to detect pedestrians in
the crosswalk. If a pedestrian was detected as still in the crosswalk, the
system was programmed to extend the crossing time by .02 second increments
to maximum of six additional seconds.
