The Township of Pemberton has installed an in-pavement lighting system from the Traffic Safety Corporation. The system has been installed on Burlington County Route 616 at an unsignalized crosswalk. This rural multilane roadway with a posted speed limit of 45 mph has an elementary school on one side and a middle school on the other. Prior to the installation of this system, the measures in place included a high visibility crosswalk and advance signs with flashers that are activated during the times when students would be arriving at or leaving school. Even with these measures in place, the school continued to report motorists failing to yield to pedestrians and "near misses."

As a result, Burlington County has used funding from the NJ Division of Highway Traffic Safety to install the in-pavement lighting system to hopefully improve safety at the crosswalk by making motorists more aware of the presence of the crosswalk and crossing pedestrians. The system is push-button activated and includes nine in-pavement lights and new pedestrian crossing signs with lights that flash imultaneously with the in-pavement lights. The county is presently conducting an valuation of the effectiveness of the system. For more information, contact Michael Nei, Assistant Traffic Engineer at
