Most
transportation planners receive little or no formal training in pedestrian
planning and design. Planners need information on how many pedestrians
are out there and how to accommodate them in the transportation system.
Below is a list of reports that are geared toward the transportation
planner. Documents are provided as
PDF files (Acrobat
Reader required),
HTML files and
CD ROMs.

Data Collection and Analysis for Communities
 |
|
Sponsor: PBIC and Federal Highway Administration
Summary: To assist communities seeking to develop effective pedestrian and bicycle facilities, the Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center, with support from the Federal Highway Administration, has developed "Pedestrian and Bicycle Data Collection in United States Communities: Quantifying Use, Surveying, Users, and Documenting Facility Extent." This report describes how communities can collect data about bicycle and pedestrian facilities, and includes case studies from 27 communities. Future publications will include a recommended practices guide, and sample forms for local collection of pedestrian and bicycle data.
Available Documents:
Pedestrian and Bicycle Data Collection (PDF format, 6 meg) - This report examines 27 communities' activities to collect, analyze, and apply pedestrian and bicycle data. The case study approach taken in this report allows users to compare options appropriate to their communities. (January 2005, 205 pages) NOTE: Large Download!!

Guidebook on
Methods to Estimate Non-Motorized Travel
 |
|
Sponsor: Federal
Highway Administration
Summary:
The Federal Highway Administration has developed a two-volume "Guidebook
on Methods to Estimate Non-Motorized Travel." The first volume, "Overview
of Methods," provides an overview of available methods for predicting
future levels of bicycle and pedestrian travel or travel demand while
the second volume, "Supporting Documentation," provides detailed information
on the methods and includes a variety of reference materials.
Available Documents:
Four
Page Brief (PDF format 115k) - provides overview of
project goals and methods.
Overview
of Methods (HTML format) - provides a concise overview
for each available method and tool, including some typical applications,
pros and cons, and a quick reference guide on ease of use, data requirements,
sensitivity to design factors, and whether widely used.
Supporting
Documentation (HTML format) - provides substantially
more detail on the methods, including purpose, structure, input/data
needs, assumptions, and real-world applications.
Trip
Generation Workshop Summary (HTML format) - In November
1996, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) sponsored a Trip Generation
Workshop in Washington, DC. The workshop, attended by many leading
non-motorized modelers, was held to exchange insights on state-of-the-practice
for non-motorized transportation modeling.

An Evaluation
of 3D/4D Visualization:
North & South Roosevelt Blvds. Key West,
Florida
 |
|
Sponsor: Federal
Highway Administration, Florida Department of Transportation
Summary:
This CD-ROM represents a joint effort on the part of the Federal Highway
Administration and Florida Department of Transportation to "document
the process" that is currently involved in the use of 3D/4D visualiation
technologies. It does so by tracing the use of advanced visualization
capabilities in an actual project...in this case, the roughly 18-month
Project Development and Environmental study phase of the North &
South Roosevelt Boulevard project in Key West, Florida.

FHWA Course
on Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation
 |
|
Sponsor: Federal
Highway Administration
Summary:
The FHWA has developed course material intended for use in graduate
or undergraduate level transportation planning and design curricula.
The course provides current information on pedestrian and bicycle
planning and design techniques, as well as practical lessons on how
to increase bicycling and walking through land-use practices and engineering
design.
Available Documents:
FHWA
Course on Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation - Summary Page (PDF
format 21k) - provides
brief overview of product and workshops.
FHWA
Course on Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation; Student Workbook
- provides student course book.
FHWA
Course on Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation; Instructor's Guide
- includes instructor notes and Powerpoint slides.
Currently, the course is being reviewed by FHWA. Once comments are
incorporated, the final report will be available on-line at this site.
If you have joined the PBIC email list,
you will receive notification when the report is available.
