Workplace Policies

There are numerous policies employers can implement to encourage employees to walk, bicycle, and take transit. Many of these policies, such as parking cash-outs and transit reimbursements, fall under the heading of Transportation Demand Management (TDM) strategies designed to reduce congestion and other transportation-related issues. Still other policies are designed solely to encourage more physical activity as a means to improve employees' health. Policies such as providing showers in the building, encouraging a certain amount of walking hours per week among employees, and participating in Walk to Work Day or other employee fitness programs can all be put in place to support walking and promote physical fitness. For more ideas, see the section Strategies to Promote Walking.
