Policy & Planning

Communities that are bicycle and pedestrian-friendly have one thing in common: they place a high priority on planning methods and policy-making that favor alternative transportation.

The role of successful land use and transportation planning in establishing good multi-modal service is too often underestimated. But planning is key. As Walkable Communities director Dan Burden points out, "Engineers must react to whatever is given to them. And when planning is poor, their job becomes that much harder."
