UNC Highway Safety Research Center awarded continued funding to operate PBIC

CHAPEL HILL, NC —The Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center (PBIC) has been renewed for up to four additional years to the University of North Carolina Highway Safety Research Center (HSRC).
“We are extremely excited to have the opportunity to continue our efforts in making walking and bicycling safer and more convenient modes of transportation,” said Charlie Zegeer, PBIC director. “We have helped many communities to improve their environments for pedestrians and bicyclists, but we recognize this work is not done.”
HSRC has operated the clearinghouse since it was established nearly 12 years ago. Since that time, PBIC has developed and implemented trainings, launched a national Webinar series, maintained six informational websites and handled thousands of requests for technical assistance.
Highlights of planned activities for PBIC in the next year include:
- Work collaboratively with a range of national partners to identify and address gaps in resources available for transportation professionals
- Continue the Center’s Livable Communities Webinar series
- Launch a podcast series to share and promote best practices
- Provide new content on the Center’s informational websites, www.walkinginfo.org and www.bicyclinginfo.org, including regular news features and upcoming events
- Add new videos to the Center’s Video Library
- Expand and promote the Center’s new Bike to Work website, www.biketoworkinfo.org
Since its inception in 1999, PBIC's mission has been to improve the quality of life in communities through the increase of safe walking and bicycling as a viable means of transportation and physical activity. The Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center is maintained by the University of North Carolina Highway Safety Research Center with funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration.
