The University of North Carolina's Highway Safety Research Center (HSRC)
and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) are interested in
evaluating (1) the effects of pedestrian countdown signals on pedestrian
and motorist behavior and (2) the effects of leading pedestrian
intervals (LPI’s) on motor vehicle-pedestrian crashes. Before we can
initiate a study, we need to identify interested cities and candidate
intersections for treatments. Also, if funding is approved, we would
like to work with several cities that are planning to install countdown
signals or LPI’s. We would be asking for your help in selecting study
locations. HSRC would collect and analyze data and write the report, in
cooperation with IIHS. Of course, we will report the results of the
evaluations. If your city might be willing to participate in either (or
both) of these two evaluation studies, please contact either Charles
Zegeer (charlie_zegeer@unc.edu or 919-962-7801) or Herman Huang
(herman_huang@unc.edu or 919-962-8720). Thank you in advance for your
help!
