School audits

There are many audits available that focus on assessing the safety for school children who walk to school or assessing a school route's "walkability" to assist in the promotion of physical activity.

Most of these audits were developed for use by a professional team of auditors (usually a task force or school safety team, including a school official and a traffic engineer or safety professional), but some audits are less formal and were developed for parents to use with their children.

For school-related walkability audits, checklists, and materials, consider the following:

  • School Site Assessment for Traffic Safety — Tool developed by the Florida Traffic and Bicycle Safety Education Program to examine biking and walking conditions at the school campus.
  • Neighborhood Site Assessment — Tool developed by the Florida Traffic and Bicycle Safety Education Program to examine biking and walking conditions on the route to school.
  • California Walk to School Day Walkability Checklist — Checklist developed by the California Walk to School Headquarters to promote walking to school, identify barriers, and collect behavioral data about walking to school.
  • Maryland Safe Routes to School and Neighborhood Audit — Tool (in Chapter 7) that is part of the Maryland Safe Routes to School Guidebook, developed by the State of Maryland Council on Physical Fitness to assess infrastructure, operations, and attitudes related to walking to school.
