Orlando Combats Mean Streets Status with Weapon from FHWA & NHTSA!
"Equipped with the just released version of PBCAT (that's short for the
Pedestrian & Bicycle Crash Analysis Tool), the Orlando Metropolitan Area has
embarked on a crusade to lose its designation as the most dangerous pedestrian
area in the nation. The ranking was made by the Surface Transportation Policy
Project in August 1998 in it's report, Mean Streets 1998. Orlando used PBCAT
to analyze over 600 pedestrian crashes for the 1993-1997 time period and identify
appropriate countermeasures. In addition to general measures, such as speed
reduction, specific physical changes were identified to respond to the ten hot
spots in the metro area that accounted for 169 crashes and 22 fatalities."
The Orlando Urban Area Arterial Pedestrian Crash Study, a study of 617 Motorist-Versus-Pedestrian
Crashes on State Roads 50 and 436 and US Highways 17/92, 192 and 441 during the
years 1993 through 1997 is available as a downloadable PDF (Adobe Acrobat) file
