How to Develop a Pedestrian Safety Action Plan updated with enhanced education, enforcement content

CHAPEL HILL, NC — Enhanced content related to pedestrian and bicycle education and enforcement has been added to the FHWA document, How to Develop a Pedestrian Safety Action Plan, which was first printed in 2006.
The new content provides an overview of when and how education and enforcement can be effective, key education messages and strategies for educating different audiences, community and law enforcement approaches, and examples and success stories from various localities.
The enhancements were developed by staff from the UNC Highway Safety Research Center with funding from NHTSA. The updated content, found on pages 67-110, can be viewed at http://katana.hsrc.unc.edu/cms/downloads/howtoguide2006.pdf. Printed copies will be available in the fall.
